California court ponders key Net jurisdiction case

Aprisma Management Technologies has closed its Asia Pacific operations, blaming poor "economic conditions".

The closure cost the jobs of nine staff from Australia and six from North Asia.

Mandy Riley, financial controller of Aprisma Australia is assisting in "wrapping things up" at Aprisma and told Computerworld all Aprisma staff in Australia have lost their jobs as a result of the closure.

Riley confirmed staff left on Monday, adding: "I am here to turn the lights off and will be here till the end of the month."

Asked about impact on local clients Riley said channel partners were still in place to provide support.

The network management software arm of now-defunct Cabletron Systems became an independent company last month. Aprisma had previously been operating as an independant arm of switchmaker Enterasys Networks, which itself was a spin-of from Cabletron.

Alison Higgins-Miller, president, Aprisma Asia Pacific did not return calls, but an IDG report from the US said Enterasys, Aprisma's parent company, which is under investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, transferred cash from Aprisma.

According to an Aprisma US spokesman: "Aprisma is a majority-owned subsidiary of Enterasys. Enterasys transferred US$70 million cash from Aprisma in order to strengthen its balance sheet. Aprisma's balance sheet reflects a remaining $10 million with no long-term debt. Aprisma's cash position has not raised any concern with our auditors, nor does it affect the viability of Aprisma as a going concern."

Aprisma is currently in the process of letting go about 15 per cent, or 65 individuals, from its workforce worldwide.

"The restructuring began on April 12 and is anticipated to be completed by the end of April," says the Aprisma spokesman. -- Denis Dubie, Network World Fusion (US) contributed to this story
