EMC expands app management capabilities

EMC Corp. has announced significant enhancements to its flagship EMC ControlCenter family of integrated storage management software. The enhancements aim to extend the capabilities of the storage management software to monitor, report, plan and provision resources across tiered storage environments, to support customers' information lifecycle management (ILM) strategies.

Alex Robertson, technology solutions manager at EMC SA, reports that, in addition to support for EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON and all other EMC storage platforms, EMC has added more complete support for HP, IBM and HDS storage systems; tighter integration with systems management frameworks; and open SMI-S standards support. "EMC enhanced ControlCenter's capability to monitor the health and utilization of multi-vendor environments with support for additional HDS, HP and IBM open systems arrays and Linux hosts," says Robertson. "It also offers new performance monitoring and reporting for HDS arrays and Linux hosts and additional active management for Hewlett-Packard arrays." EMC also announced tighter integration with enterprise management platforms. Users can now initiate ControlCenter functionality from within the systems management interface, the company says.

For example, customers using BMC Software Patrol, CA Unicenter, HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli now can natively issue commands to ControlCenter applications such as EMC Automated Resource Manager (ARM) for automated provisioning of heterogeneous storage resources, the company says. Finally, EMC announced the availability of the SNIA Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) support within the ControlCenter family of integrated storage management software. "Through industry standards support, EMC extends its lead in providing a unified view and single point of control for the widest range of multi-vendor storage environments," Robertson concludes.
