The third way

With the price of hard disk DVD recorders falling so dramatically, a dedicated DVD player seeking to justify its existence seems to have two options these days. First, it can be really cheap. Second, it can be really flash.

Sherwood has come up with a third option. At $999 (US$607), the company's new SD-860 isn't neither a bargain or eye-wateringly expensive. Similarly, if it doesn't quite stand toe-to-toe with some of the super-machines we've seen recently, there's certainly enough about this universal player to interest those with budgets in the price range.

CD, DVD, DVD-A and SACD playback will cover most of your bases, and it's also compatible with MP3, WMA and WMV encoded discs. Additionally you get DivX playback, JPEG viewing and, unusually, you can watch Kodak picture CDs, too.
