Many vendors have cobbled together high-performance computing clusters aimed at life scientists. Some have even bundled-in open-source informatics applications. But Apple Computer Inc. has taken things further. Its Apple Workgroup Cluster for Bioinformatics is a preconfigured Xserve G5 cluster designed to be easy to manage and use.
The cluster consists of between four and 16 Xserve servers, a rack to hold the servers, cabling, and systems and application software. The bundle includes The BioTeam's iNquiry package of 200 informatics applications, such as BLAST and HMMER, featuring friendly graphical interfaces. Many of the informatics applications bundled with the cluster are optimized for the Mac OS X environment and for Apple's G5 Velocity Engine.
