Vodafone confirms Nokia as 3G vendor

Vodafone has confirmed that Nokia has been selected to build its 3G network in New Zealand and Australia.

Speculation that Nokia was the preferred vendor has been circulating since March when Nokia began advertising for staff to work on a "next wave network" in New Zealand.

In a statement released midday, Vodafone technology director Jeni Mundy is quoted as saying Nokia was appointed after a seven-month selection process which included a reverse e-auction, in which Nokia and the other contenders bid their pricing.

According to the statement, "Nokia was the most competitive and was awarded the contract".

The other contenders were Ericsson, Nortel Networks and a Siemens-NEC consortium.
