Although storage leader EMC Corp. lacks a cross-platform storage virtualization product of its own, IBM Corp.'s SVC (SAN Volume Controller) 1.2 now supports EMC's Clariion and Symmetrix disk arrays, in addition to arrays from Hitachi Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., and IBM. SVC allows storage administrators to combine multiple arrays and to manage them as though they were a single storage pool. The new version supports AIX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris, VMWare ESX Server, and Windows, with entry-level pricing at approximately US$75,000.
