JOHANNESBURG (01/27/2004) - Following the recent resignation of Dan van der Westhuizen, Computer Associates International Inc. (CA) has appointed Gary Lawrence to take over as the company's South Africa (SA) country manager.
Lawrence, whose official duties will only commence in mid-March, takes over from Van der Westhuizen, who, after four years with CA, has moved on to join arivia.kom in a senior management capacity.
At the top of Lawrence's list of to-dos must be the increasing of awareness of CA and its product offering, something which the company admits that it has not done a good job of, over the years that it has had a presence in the African region.
In this role, he will be responsible for CA's business operations throughout Africa, with specific focus on growing market share for CA products and services via direct sales, as well as partnerships with local distributors, resellers and systems integrators.
His geographic responsibilities include the substantial SA market, together with extending CA's market presence throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Lawrence has a track record of building successful software businesses in Africa spanning almost 20 years. Before joining CA, he led Business Objects S.A.'s local subsidiary as country manager. During his time at the company, Business Objects' market share grew from 4 percent to 14 percent, and annual revenue tripled.
Lawrence will report to Heyley Tabor, GM of CA EMEA.
