Agile revamps PLM platform for SOA

SAN FRANCISCO (11/17/2003) - Agile Software Corp., a product life cycle management ISV, will announce this week availability of Agile 9.0 rewritten as a SOA (services-oriented architecture) platform.

The company also unveiled an environmental compliance module for the platform.

In conjunction with the Agile Environmental Compliance, company executives said that it will build a hazardous substance database for its customers.

The database will allow manufacturers to load in bill of materials data which will be matched up against hazardous materials compliance regulations by country, according to Chris Wong, executive vice president for corporate strategy and development at Agile Software.

Recently, Sony shipped 20,000 PlayStations to Holland only to have them turned back at the border because the PlayStations contain cadmium, a banned substance in Holland.

"This was a missed (sales) opportunity that could have been prevented with the right compliance software," said Wong.

The SOA integration framework built on Web services, and J2EE will allow for deeper collaboration between Agile's PLM software and other enterprise applications such as CRM, supply chain, and ERP, according to Chris Farinacci, PLM product marketing manager.

Agile is also adding analytics to the platform so that at an executive level customers can track product schedules and budgets in a dashboard format.

Farinacci said that as companies add more applications and modules to their enterprise solutions the notion of a common services platform is critical.

"We now have common security, workflow, document management, and data model, and everything can be shared across the platform," Farinacci said.

Agile 9.0 is shipping now.
