Microsoft inches closer on Windows 2000

Microsoft has moved a little closer to releasing Beta 3 of Windows 2000, shipping Release Candidate 0 (RC0) for the beta version this week.

Beta 3 for Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Professional -- formerly called Windows NT Server and Workstation 5.0 -- still is on track for release in the first quarter of 1999, probably in February or early March, officials said.

Since Beta 2 was released in mid-August, Microsoft has included tighter integration with Windows Terminal Services, a wizard for Active Directory set-up, and a host of improvements Microsoft characterised as "fit-and-finish" work based on feedback from testers.

RC0 was shipped to approximately 1000 US-based technical beta sites on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
