Win98 updates beeline to users

Microsoft this week will take a more proactive role in notifying Windows 98 users of critical updates, such as bug fixes and security patches.

Windows Critical Update Notification will go a step further than Windows Update, a feature of Win98 that links directly to Microsoft's Web site for operating system updates and add-ons.

After subscribing to Windows Critical Update Notification and downloading software, users will receive notification of must-have updates as soon as they log on to the Internet, a Microsoft representative said. They will be presented with the option of downloading the fix immediately or postponing the operation.

The fixes, patches and updates already are available on the Windows Update site, to which Win98 users can link from the Start menu. The updates will be included in the Windows 98 Service Pack 1 (SP1), which is now in beta testing and which Microsoft plans to release in January. SP1 also will be available through Windows Update.
