Greene invests in network OS venture

A start-up with financial backing from VMware co-founder Diane Greene is developing a network operating system designed to virtualise networks and create networks optimised for cloud deployments.
The company, Nicira, has a patent pending for a "network operating system for managing and securing networks". Its technology includes NOX, a network-control platform designed to support large enterprise networks with hundreds of switches supporting thousands of hosts.
Besides Greene, other investors include the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which was formed by two ex-Netscape executives.
Nicira's co-founders also include Scott Shenker and Nick McKeown, computer science professors at Stanford University.
