OpenCloud wins Nokia Siemens investment

Nokia Siemens and other backers put money into NZ-linked firm

Nokia Siemems Networks has invested £4 million (NZ$8.5 million) in New Zealand telecommunications software specialist OpenCloud.

While now based in Cambridge, UK, OpenCloud is a New Zealand-grown company, originating in Wellington, where it retains an office. As well as the Nokia Siemens Networks Investment, it has won £1m from its existing investors Advent Venture Partners and No 8 Ventures.

In addition to the investment by Nokia Siemens Networks, OpenCloud has signed an OEM agreement for OpenCloud’s Rhino Telecom Application Server and Service Interaction Server to be integrated into Nokia Siemens Networks' charge@once unified product suite.

For the last two years, OpenCloud and Nokia Siemens Networks already have an established relationship, and have 13 joint customers.

According to a statement from OpenCloud announcing the investment, the funding "will be used by OpenCloud to further its expansion across the Globe. It will also allow OpenCloud to extend its partner and application portfolios, as well as assist in the development of future products. This announcement comes at a time when the market demand for OpenCloud’s Telecoms Application Server and Service Broker products is increasing.

OpenCloud’s clients include BT, Vodafone, and T Mobile.

The Rhino Telecom Application Server is based on the Java API for Integrated Networks (JAIN) and the JAIN SLEE (Service Logic Execution Environment) standard, which Open Cloud helped to develop.
