Six vendors in the running for major Customs system upgrade

Six vendors have made what’s termed a "long list" to become prime vendor for the development of a joint border management system for NZ Customs and biosecurity agencies.
They are Datacom, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Unisys and Bangalore-based Wipro Technologies.
A Budget allocation of $75.9 million was made in May for the first phase of the development, though various industry estimates of the final cost of the project range up to $200 million.
NZ Customs is the lead agency. Key components of its 13-year-old core system, CusMod, are obsolete.
The new system is aimed at better regulating processes at New Zealand’s borders.
Computerworld understands that 17 commodity providers have responded to the RFI to provide software for the first phase of the project.
The new system will bring Customs and MAF Biosecurity processes together to provide improved security and productivity.
