Grants to be used for practical educational advancement of individuals in internet entrepreneurship

A foundation launched by Internet New Zealand in memory of the late Liz Dengate Thrush was introduced to ICANN at its meeting in Paris this month by Internet NZ president Peter Macaulay.
Dengate Thrush was killed in a car accident in Wellington in June 2006.
The objective of the foundation is to award funding grants for use in practical educational advancement of individuals in internet entrepreneurship.
It’s been funded initially by a number of donations, including one from internet pioneer Vint Cerf, who co-created the TCP/IP protocol that forms the basis of the internet.
The current chairman of ICANN is Peter Dengate Thrush, husband of Liz Dengate Thrush.
Macaulay says the Liz Dengate Thrush Foundation will support the same people and projects that Liz did during her life.
He also presented to the ICANN meeting “Hector’s World”, a New Zealand developed cyber safety resource for young children.
Internet NZ has provided $200,000 in funding to Hector’s World, which engages young children on the net with free on-line animated stories, puzzles and cyber safety buttons.
Hector’s World is a charitable subsidiary of New Zealand’s cyber safety organisation, Netsafe, based in Auckland.
CEOP, a division of the UK Home Office, recently took the first international licence of Hector’s World materials.
Macaulay says keen interest has been shown in the resource by other countries.
