The Technology Commendation Awards recognises new technology that benefits New Zealand

Four New Zealand companies received the 2006 Technology Commendation Award from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology in Christchurch last week.

Compac Sorting Equipment, Optimation New Zealand, Weta Productions and Mako Networks all received the award for their contributions to economic growth and their development of cutting-edge technology, says the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

Compac Sorting Equipment was selected for developing vision technology for sorting and grading kiwifruit, and for an 80% increase in global equipment sales, to $45 million, over the last two years.

Optimation was selected for developing technology for automatically billing customers in the international non-telco utilities market. The technology has contributed to a 40% revenue growth and an increase in high-skill jobs during the last financial year.

Weta Productions, the screen production division of the Weta Group, was selected for its unique use of technology to create high-quality, low-cost television animation. The company has also created 50 new jobs.

Mako Networks was selected for its security and network management system which protects small business broadband users from the associated risks and costs. The company’s revenue has grown 150%.

The Technology Commendation Awards was established in 1999 to recognise companies that have developed or applied new technology which has grown their business and benefited New Zealand, says the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.
