Broadband available, but mains voltage may be a problem

InternetNZ and Wellington are making a bid to host a meeting of world internet body Icann, scheduled for March 2006.
The 2006 meeting is set to be held in the Asia Pacific region; in fact, there are two scheduled meetings there around that time, but InternetNZ has chosen the March one as more convenient.
The proposal spends a good deal of its 23 pages talking about the attractions of Wellington and the facilities of the Michael Fowler Centre and the adjacent Town Hall. Having promised meeting delegates 10 Mbit/s Ethernet and wireless connections, courtesy of Citylink, it acknowledges that mains voltage may be the real problem. “A limited number” of 110-volt power supplies suitable for US laptops will be available, as will conversion plugs, it assures Icann.
InternetNZ commits to forming a subcommittee specifically to deal with the meeting, and plans to put up a website for the lead-up planning and the meeting itself. The society is looking at a budget of $NZ212,000, significantly less than budgets for many previous Icann meetings.
Internal discussion of the proposal was on the agenda for a council meeting scheduled for last Friday, July 2.
