Counties Power taps Silver Spring Networks for smart grid

The deployment, which is scheduled to begin in late 2013, will be delivered by both Silver Spring Networks and Metrix

Counties Power, a lines company serving more than 37,000 customers in New Zealand’s North Island, is set to deploy a smart metering-as-a-service solution, delivered by Silver Spring Networks and Metrix.

The deployment, which is scheduled to begin in late 2013, will see Counties Power leverage Silver Spring’s Gen4 networking technology and UtilityIQ software for the smart grid, metering and delivery of the service.

According to Counties Power, the deployment will give customers greater control over their electricity consumption and their bills.

“Counties Power looks forward to using the Silver Spring and Metrix solution to improve the reliability and consistency of service for our customers,” says Counties Power CEO Neil Simmonds,

“Counties Power will also use the platform and its new smart meters to minimise future network capital costs and, therefore, prices over the next decade.”

“The complexity of disaggregated markets is no longer a barrier to unlocking smart grid benefits for energy distributors, retailers, and consumers, and we are proud to be a driving force behind this recent market momentum,” says John Garner, country manager, Australia and New Zealand at Silver Spring Networks
